A specialist in the African media, Frére (journalism, U. of Brussels) explains that since 1990, thousands of newspapers and hundreds of radio stations have blossomed in Central Africa where the media had been a state monopoly. In order to clarify the dynamics of the media in the region and to identify strategies that can strengthen or weaken them, she looks at how specific issues are being and have been covered in nine countries. Among her cases are providing information in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo; Rwandan journalists before, during, and after the genocide; and the media between protest and submission in Cameroon.
