Annotation Summary:

While the 2008 war between Russia and the Caucasus nation of Georgia has largely dropped out of the public eye, its significance is still being mulled over in academe and in the corridors of power. Asmus' book stakes out a neoconservative stance on the war, arguing that it was caused by a combination of the West's lukewarm support of Georgia's independence (especially of its entry into NATO) and Russia's desire to assert a sphere of influence in the former Soviet republics along its border. While the book includes many interesting details about the war (such as the cyber-attacks on Georgia's government and important institutions), some readers will question the author's failure to seriously consider whether there was a relationship between the Putin government's strong actions against Georgia and the dismissive attitude toward Russia typical of U.S. foreign policy in the post-Soviet era. (And, given that the book is about a war, its lack of maps is very puzzling.) Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
