Annotation Summary:
This handbook provides a survey of international law as an academic discipline and a working system of law. Editor Armstrong (emeritus, international relations, U. of Exeter, UK) presents 27 essays organized into four sections. Opening essays address the nature of international law in theory and practice. The historical evolution of international law is then examined in chapters discussing international law in the ancient world, Grotius, international law in the 19th century, Latin American international law, the relationship between religion and international law, and the struggle for an international constitutional order. A section on law and power in international society engages with such issues as US inconsistencies in its treatment of international law, the invasion of Iraq, and the International Criminal Court. Finally, a section on key issues in international law contains chapters on law, legitimacy, and the World Trade Organization; attainments, eclipses, and disciplinary renewal in international human rights law; colonial origins of intellectual property regimes in Africa; indigenous rights claims in international law; international refugee law; sustainable development in international law; World Trade Organization law and sustainable development; and other topics.
